FARQUHAR GROUP • OUTER ISLANDS

Farquhar Atoll

An exceptionally remote coral atoll for serious anglers, expedition travellers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Farquhar is one of Seychelles’ most remote island groups, lying far southwest of Mahé. The atoll includes low-lying islands, reefs, sandbanks and a large lagoon shaped by tides, weather and ocean conditions.

A Specialist Fishery

Farquhar’s shallow flats and reef environments make it attractive to experienced saltwater anglers. Species targeted can include giant trevally, triggerfish, bonefish and other tropical flats species, although catches and conditions vary. Fishing areas, seasons, guides and conservation rules are subject to the current operating programme.

For the broader fishing picture, see Fishing in Seychelles and compare Farquhar with Alphonse, another specialist Outer Island fishery.

Wild Marine Life

The surrounding reefs, lagoon and ocean support turtles, rays, sharks, seabirds and reef fish.

Expedition Atmosphere

This is not a conventional resort island. Facilities are limited and conditions can change quickly.

Remote Access

Travel arrangements need to be organised well ahead, with weather and aircraft operations considered.

Birdlife and Conservation

The atoll supports important seabird habitat and wildlife associated with coral islands and surrounding marine environments. Seabird abundance varies seasonally, so historic counts should not be treated as permanent population figures.

The Island Today

Farquhar remains a lightly developed Outer Island destination. Visitors should expect a specialist, nature-led experience rather than a broad choice of restaurants, shops or entertainment.

Getting There

Access arrangements can change. Confirm the current aircraft schedule, baggage limits, accommodation, transfers, weather contingencies and operator requirements directly before departure. Do not rely on historical schedules.

Responsible Fishing and Wildlife

Follow all current guide, operator and conservation rules. Treat nesting birds, turtles and other protected animals as strictly off-limits to disturbance. Fishing regulations and catch-and-release requirements can vary by programme and species.

Who Is Farquhar For?

  • Experienced saltwater fly anglers.
  • Expedition-style travellers comfortable with limited facilities.
  • Wildlife enthusiasts interested in remote coral-island ecosystems.
  • Travellers looking for an Outer Island experience far removed from the main circuit.
