Aldabra

Aldabra, Seychelles

← Back to All Islands

Aldabra is the largest raised coral atoll in Seychelles and one of the archipelago’s most important conservation sites. Its remoteness, giant tortoise population, seabird colonies, mangroves and marine habitats make it fundamentally different from the islands most holidaymakers visit.

A Conservation Destination

Aldabra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Special Reserve managed by the Seychelles Islands Foundation. Access is controlled and visits require prior authorisation. It should therefore be treated as a specialist conservation or expedition destination, not as a conventional Seychelles excursion.

What Makes Aldabra Special?

  • One of the world’s largest raised coral atolls.
  • A major population of Aldabra giant tortoises.
  • Important seabird, turtle and marine habitats.
  • Exceptional remoteness and limited human infrastructure.

Planning a Visit

Aldabra has no conventional hotel or guesthouse. Visitors must arrange authorised access and appropriate transport well in advance. Conditions, permissions and logistics can change, so current Seychelles Islands Foundation information should always take precedence over older travel material.

If you are interested in Seychelles wildlife but want a destination with a more conventional visitor experience, compare Bird Island or Alphonse.
