SEYCHELLES CULTURE

Seychelles Folklore

Stories, beliefs and traditions passed through generations in the islands.

Seychellois culture is shaped by African, European and Asian influences and by a long relationship with the sea and islands. Visitors are generally welcomed warmly; a little consideration for local customs goes a long way.

An Oral Tradition

Before modern media, stories, songs, sayings and beliefs were shared largely by word of mouth. Different families and communities could tell the same story in different ways, so there is rarely one definitive version of a traditional tale.

Soungoula

Soungoula is a well-known character in Seychellois storytelling. Often portrayed as clever, mischievous and resourceful, Soungoula stories can use humour to explore human behaviour and everyday life. The character belongs to a wider Indian Ocean and African storytelling tradition of trickster figures.

Supernatural Beliefs

Stories, Not Historical Claims

Traditional Seychelles stories include beliefs about spirits, witches, enchanted places and supernatural encounters. These stories should be understood as part of the islands’ cultural heritage rather than presented as historical fact.

The Sea in Storytelling

Fishermen, sailors and coastal communities developed stories around storms, strange encounters, remote islands and the dangers of the sea. The ocean could be both a source of food and a source of danger.

Folklore, Music & Dance

Storytelling sits alongside music, dance, proverbs and traditional celebrations in Seychellois cultural life. Genres such as moutya are especially important to the country’s cultural heritage and connect performance with history, community and identity.

Keep the Stories Alive

Folklore changes as it is retold. If you hear a traditional story from a Seychellois storyteller, ask where the version comes from and how it was passed down. Recording and sharing local voices responsibly is one way to help keep this living heritage visible. The University of Seychelles’ Folklore project is one example of this work in action.
